چکیده

Packing graphs is a combinatorial problem where several given graphs are being mapped into a common host graph such that every edge is used at most once. In the planar tree packing problem we are given two trees T1 and T2 on n vertices and have to find a planar graph on n vertices that is the edge-disjoint union of T1 and T2. A clear exception that must be made is the star which cannot be packed together with any other tree. But according to a conjecture of García et al. from 1997 this is the only exception, and all other pairs of trees admit a planar packing. Previous results addressed various special cases, such as a tree and a spider tree, a tree and a caterpillar, two trees of diameter four, two isomorphic trees, and trees of maximum degree three. Here we settle the conjecture in the affirmative and prove its general form, thus making it the planar tree packing theorem. The proof is constructive and provides a polynomial time algorithm to obtain a packing for two given nonstar trees.

Simple Algorithms for Steiner Trees and Paths Packing Problems in Planar Graphs

In this paper we give a short survey on eecient algorithms for Steiner trees and paths packing problems in planar graphs. We particularly concentrate on recent results. The rst result is a linear-time algorithm for packing vertex-disjoint trees resp. paths within a planar graph, where the vertices to be connected lie on at most two diierent faces 26, 32]. This algorithm is based on a linear-tim...

Rigidity of Infinite (circle) Packings

The nerve of a packing is a graph that encodes its combinatorics. The vertices of the nerve correspond to the packed sets, and an edge occurs between two vertices in the nerve precisely when the corresponding sets of the packing intersect. The nerve of a circle packing and other well-behaved packings, on the sphere or in the plane, is a planar graph. It was an observation of Thurston [Thl, Chap...

Planar Lombardi Drawings for Subcubic Graphs

We prove that every planar graph with maximum degree three has a planar drawing in which the edges are drawn as circular arcs that meet at equal angles around every vertex. Our construction is based on the Koebe–Thurston–Andreev circle packing theorem, and uses a novel type of Voronoi diagram for circle packings that is invariant under Möbius transformations, defined using three-dimensional hyp...

Planar Packing of Binary Trees

In the graph packing problem we are given several graphs and have to map them into a single host graph G such that each edge of G is used at most once. Much research has been devoted to the packing of trees, especially to the case where the host graph must be planar. More formally, the problem is: Given any two trees T1 and T2 on n vertices, we want a simple planar graph G on n vertices such th...

Conformal Uniformization and Packings

A new short proof is given for Brandt and Harrington's theorem about conformal uniformizations of planar nitely connected domains as domains with boundary components of speciied shapes. This method of proof generalizes to periodic domains. Letting the uniformized domains degenerate in a controlled manner, we deduce the existence of packings of speciied shapes and with speciied combinatorics. Th...
